Apiary for bagh bidhoba
Low-cost, easy-to-construct and low-maintenance beekeeping structure designed for the tiger widows of the Sundarbans.
Sundarbans is the world’s only mangrove tiger land and it straddles the region between India and Bangladesh. Humans and animals live in close proximity here. A combination of human-wildlife conflict, and folk cultures and religion that revere tigers as divine entities, has created a population of ‘tiger widows’ – a category of ostracised women in the Sundarbans.
The design prioritises simplicity, durability and ease of upkeep, ensuring that it can be built and maintained with minimal resources while remaining effective within the region’s challenging conditions.
